The
Maitreya Institute
The Maitreya Institute aims to
make Tibetan Buddhism accessible in the Netherlands,
because we think that the principles and methods presented
in Buddhism can contribute to human happiness. We have
been organizing teachings and courses on meditation
and all aspects of Buddhist philosophy since 1979. Our
two study- and medtitation centers are in Amsterdam
and Emst.
Our
teachers also give courses and lectures in other
locations in the Netherlands, such as Breda, and
Groningen.
See also About Us.
This English section of the website focuses
on the teachings and courses that are taught in English,
and not on the Dutch program.
The FPMT
The
Maitreya Institute is affiliated with the 'Foundation
for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT),
an international non-profit organisation, under the
spiritual guidance of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and His Holiness
the Dalai Lama.
The FPMT aims to help as many people as possible to
develop loving-kindness and compassion through education,
meditation and social projects.
Check here for current
advice from Lama Zopa.

Study
Program
Although we regularly hold guided meditations,
prayers and retreats, our main activities are concentrated
on the study
programs. These cover all levels, from talks for
beginners up to the Abridged Masters Program, which
is taught in weekends over a period of six years. The
English language program includes Discovering
Buddhism, Living in the Path and the Basic
Program.
Volunteers
Volunteers are always more then welcome
in our centers, not only because they help to keep our
teachings and courses affordable, but because there
are also projects, such as helping to build the stupa
in Emst, editing newsletters or this website, etc.,
in which your skills can be of great help.
Like to help? Please see our volunteers page.
The Maitreya Project is building a 500 ft. tall statue
of Maitreya Buddha – the Buddha who is predicted
to come in the future – in Kushinigar, North
India.
